Patrick Johnson, Ph.D

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of the Social and Cultural Studies program in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley.

His research interests focus on Black media representations, the continued circulation of past Black media, and the connections between television and Black music cultures. He has published co-authored chapters in the anthologies Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World and We Dare Say Love: Supporting African American Male Achievement.

His most recent work, “It’s a man thing, Gina: Watching gender in Martin” was published in Communication, Culture, and Critique. Professor Johnson teaches courses on Black representations in television, music, and visual art.
